YES Programme

GIBB proudly hosts participants of the YES Programme, providing unemployed youth with valuable opportunities to gain practical work experience. Through 8- or 12-month employment contracts, these young professionals are exposed to real-world working environments, helping to build their skills and improve their employability.

The programme includes a tailored learning and development plan aimed at equipping participants with the essential skills needed to thrive in the workplace.

Each year, the Group recruits around 30 unemployed youth across its South African offices to join the YES Programme. Over the past three years, we have welcomed 65 participants, some of whom have been offered permanent positions upon completing the programme.

Interested in joining? Applications open annually in August—apply online to be part of this opportunity.

Bursaries

The GIBB Bursary Programme supports aspiring engineers at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a focus on disciplines such as Civil, Electrical, Chemical, and Mechanical Engineering. Each year, we receive a high volume of applications —demonstrating the programme’s broad reach and impact.

As one of GIBB’s key talent pipelines, the bursary programme plays a vital role in our long-term growth strategy.

Since 2016, we’ve proudly sponsored over 300 students. Applications open annually in October, once advertised online. Eligible candidates are shortlisted for assessments and interviews, with final selections made by January of the following year.

“We invest significantly in growing our talent pipeline, with nearly half of our total training budget allocated to bursaries.” — Philip Barnard, HR Executive Director

Professional Registration

GIBB actively supports employees in achieving their professional registration with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa).

Employees are paired with dedicated mentors, meeting quarterly to track progress on their Training Experience Reports and ensure alignment with the eleven required outcomes. The company also provides support through mock interviews and practice presentations, helping candidates prepare with confidence.

Development Opportunities

We take a deliberate and proactive approach to managing our talent. Talent management and succession planning are priorities for us, and we carefully align development opportunities to support these goals—whether through competency-based training or seconding staff to specific projects for hands-on learning.

Promotion Opportunities

We are committed to regularly assessing employees who demonstrate meaningful progress—whether through academic achievement, professional registration, applying new skills, or stepping up to greater responsibilities. Rather than adhering to fixed promotion cycles, we recognize and reward growth as it happens, ensuring timely acknowledgment of individual contributions.

For the past two years, we have consistently maintained an annual promotion rate of 10%, with 87% of those promotions being equity placements.

Further Development and Training

At GIBB, we believe learning is a lifelong journey.

We’re passionate about empowering our technical professionals through multi-skilling, upskilling, and cross-skilling opportunities. Every employee is encouraged to have an open, annual conversation with their Line Manager to explore their current strengths and future career goals—conversations that shape our learning and development priorities.

Our commitment to growth goes beyond the workplace. We actively support further academic pursuits, offering our technical staff the opportunity to undertake Master's and PhD studies—fully funded by the company.
